Many in the Linux community consider Rocky Linux the replacement for CentOS. In 2021, Red Hat discontinued CentOS, a popular RHEL-compatible operating system, forcing its users to seek alternatives. It was developed by the Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation and was made generally available on June 21, 2021.

It offers a downstream, binary-compatible release for production-grade RHEL with community support. Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 7.Rocky Linux is an open source Linux distribution that supports the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) operating system source code. To check the Red Hat Enterprise Linux distribution version run the below command: ~]$ cat /etc/redhat-release and run the command uname -r or uname -a to find out the Red Hat Enterprise Linux kernel details. Login to the server and open the terminal or connect to the server through ssh using PuTTY etc. To find out the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6 or 7 kernel version, use the uname command to find the information about it.
